Roger Angell on Baseball Writing (New Yorker Culture Desk)

Amy Davidson:
What are you looking forward to this season?
Roger Angell:
Well, I haven't seen the Mets' young pitcher Matt Harvey yet, and everybody's steamed up about him--and for good reason. They're comparing him to Doc Gooden, which may be a little premature. But wonderful young pitchers inspire us all, make us feel great.
Amy Davidson:
How do you explain that thrill? When you sit down to write, how do you explain that to somebody who, maybe, has never seen a baseball game, who doesn't know why they should be interested in baseball? How do you evangelize?
Roger Angell:
I don't evangelize. I think, baseball is very complicated--there's a lot of complicated stuff going on that we all know by heart. It's very hard to explain to somebody who has not seen it before or somebody coming for the first time. It's very strange. But I've always tried to write for someone more or less like me, to someone out there who who understands baseball and if there's something complicated you can explain it fairly easily with just regular prose without using insider prose. It does lend itself to images which can be transplaced into writing, it seems to me. I try to write not to a fan or to a nonfan but just to a reader.
